DivorcedDate.com, a dating website for divorcees has revealed the Top 10 reasons why UK married couples divorce. The site surveyed 5,000 of its members on why their marriage failed. The top answer was ‘Financial Issues’ followed by ‘Lack of Communication’.
The site’s survey coincides with what is traditionally the busiest time of year for UK divorce lawyers as many married couples seek to dissolve their marriages after the Christmas/New Year break.
DivorcedDate.com spokesperson Simon Williams comments: “When we conducted a similar survey 12 months ago, communication issues were the top answer. It’s interesting that after one of the toughest years ever for family finances (according to Asda’s Income Tracker families have 8.4% less disposable income than a year ago), arguments over money have become the predominant cause of marital break-ups.”
DivorcedDate.com’s resident relationship expert Amélie Duval says: “Worries over paying the household bills, job insecurity and having to forego luxuries previously taken for granted such as holidays abroad, are placing ever greater strains on UK marriages. Financial problems can be the tipping point for an already shaky marriage, fuelling tension, arguments and mistrust.”
Top 10 Reasons for UK Divorces
1. Financial issues, arguments over money (19%)
2. Lack of communication (17%)
3. Adultery – I or my partner cheated (14%)
4. Dishonesty – my partner lied and I lost my trust in them (12%)
5. Lack of sex (11%)
6. Fallen out of love (8%)
7. Me or my partner had a mid-life crisis (7%)
8. Boredom – a need for change (5%)
9. Addiction – my partner was addicted to drink or drugs (4%)
10. My partner changed from the person I married (3%)
DivorcedDate.com have also reported a post-Christmas surge in new memberships. Since Boxing Day over 11,000 people have signed up to the site, a 100% increase on the usual rate.
DivorcedDate.com’s Amélie Duval observes: “The New Year is a time when people take stock of their life and create goals for the 12 months ahead. It’s therefore no surprise that many single people set a new relationship as a New Year objective.”
