At the annual Detroit auto show – the centerpiece of the car industry, the winners of the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards have been announced, with the Hyundai Elantra taking top honors.
For 2012′s awards, the winners are the 2012 Hyundai Elantra for car of the year and the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque for truck of the year. Hyundai is a South Korean company while Range Rover is owned by the Indian Tata Motors.
Six finalists were up or the awards, as named by a panel of 50 journalists, earlier in December. For the cars, the finalists were the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and Volkswagen Passat up for top honors. For trucks, the finalists included the BMW X3, Honda CR-V, and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
The vehicles had to be substantially changed or new from the prior year in order to be eligible for either award.
The jury included U.S. and Canadian automotive journalists, from online, print, broadcast and radio.
