New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $9.9 billion or 4.2 percent to $244.5 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The increase is the fourth in the last five months. Coming on top of recent positive housing numbers, it shows strengthening in the U.S. economy.
The June increase in durable goods followed a 5.2% increase in Mayand reached the highest level since publication of the statistics began in 1992.
Excluding transportation, new orders increased slightly. Excluding defense, new orders increased 3.0%.
Transportation led the increase in orders, growing $9.9 billion or 12.8% to $87.1 billion.
Nondefense aircraft and parts accounted for the largest part of this increase, growing $6.5 billion.
